It really is not so hard. In my view, our nation’s immigration policy should be based upon the following five maxims:
It is our decision who comes into our country either to visit or to live, and not the visitor’s;
One strong reason our country is Great is because over the years so many people from around the world have immigrated here so they can roll up their sleaves and pursue the American Dream. Those who have shown they are a boon to themselves, their families and our country who have not already become citizens should their paths be streamlined to become citizens;
Young people who were brought here at an early age and have been here for at least five years should receive special consideration either to have permanent resident status or to become citizens;
On a case-by-case basis, as humanitarians, we should allow people into our country who have been victimized by the governments of their home country and who are likely to be peaceful and good citizens;
People who are not here legally and who do not fit into maxims two, three or four should be deported back to the country from which they came.
So what do you think? I believe following this approach would satisfy every reasonable person’s desire for a sensible immigration policy. Usually life is more complicated than this, and I acknowledge there will always be unusual cases, but I believe following this formula will work.
Are you ready for one of Justice Bill Bedsworth’s stories? A man wearing a ski mask burst into a bank and shouted: “Freeze Mother-Stickers, this is a F**K-Up.” The people in the bank laughed so hard at him, the would-be robber simply left.
