A friend and neighbor of mine has a bumper sticker on his car that says: “Trump/Vance 2024 Never Surrender.” Flat out, I have no problem with people publicly supporting their political candidates, and in fact appreciate it when they do. But I have a large problem with saying “Never Surrender,” because it strongly implies that we are at war with each other! And this directly contributes to the polarization in today’s world that is harming our country and the people in it! Never Surrender our Liberties! Our Freedoms! Our Great Country! Fine! But words matter, and it is important that we choose them carefully.
As such, my suggestion is that whenever we see polarizing words like this that we talk to the person who is using them, or whose car has the bumper sticker on it, and pleasantly bring up what will be the result of those words. We are all neighbors and fellow countrymen, and we should emphasize things that bring us together and not unnecessarily say things that pull us apart. Yes, maybe it is a small thing, but small things can add up. And it is our duty as citizens of the country we love to reduce alienation instead of adding to it. What say you?
